Our understanding about the world can expand by considering numbers as qualities. We use numbers in many ways. For example, we count how many (e.g. 5 minutes), measure quality (e.g. cost of €5 or €100), or express how much we like something (e.g. Likert scales with their range of values (0=not at all – to – 10=completely love).
We can also use numbers as qualities as a way to consider and express ideas and qualities such as considering greater truths of the universe.
My understanding of numbers has expanded as I’ve studied Jin Shin Jyutsu. The numbers 1 through 26 have a special significance in Jin Shin Jyutsu – as energy centres on/in the body, as information for us about our health, as a format for us to understand greater truths about the universe and ourselves.
The energy centres on and in our body are known as safety energy locks (SEL) within the art of Jin Shin Jyutsu. 26 SEL were identified by Jiro Murai and exist in pairs on our body: there are two centres for each number SEL. For example, SEL 1 are located on the insides of our knees – one on the left knee and one on the right knee. When we place our hands on specific SEL and on sequences of SEL, we increase harmony and facilitate the flow of energy through our beings.
SEL offer information about our health. When we have tension in our body, we can look to the SEL to help us understand what may need adjusting our lives. Mary Burmeister likened the SEL to circuit breakers – when there is stagnation in a certain energy lock, it draws our attention. We can thank our body for this information and take better care of ourselves.
SEL theory offers a way for us to understand greater truths about the universe and ourselves. Each SEL aligns with characteristics. Continuing with the earlier example, SEL 1 is considered ” ‘the prime mover‘, connecting extreme heights with extreme depths” (from Burmeister and Monte, 1997, A Touch of Healing). SEL 1 helps all the energy in our bodies to flow.
When we have a greater awareness of numbers and their related concepts, we can help ourselves and others to feel better and to be more in harmony with themselves and the world. The beauty of Jin Shin Jyutsu is that we can access the benefits even when we are staying home and staying safe. Many other modalities are not as available in these times. I am thoroughly grateful for Jin Shin Jyutsu and the ability to help myself and others.
